A Personalized Data Tracking Experience
Project Overview
Wearable sensors and self-tracking systems are becoming more common, representing a rapidly growing area of research and practice at the intersection of design. The presentation of personal information gives everyone the opportunity to learn about themselves.
As a group of women, our project takes women's mental health as the starting point, gave a market-oriented solution to help women's mental state that is disturbed by hormones get a certain balance, and improve women's mental and emotional wellbeing through new ideas and experiences.
My Contributions
In the professional workshop the discussion and cooperation are conducted in each phase. As one of the two digital designers I gave ideas in perspective of the user journey part by thinking of how users can participate in the whole process, to make the experiences more engaging and interactive.
Research

In order to know what the data tracking products in the market now and how it works, we did some desk research and user research through the review of the data tracking applications. We have found some tensions between the user objective need and the subjective information the application conveys to the users, which can cause the problem that the data couldn't represent the real personal status.

The data tracking application in the market
Problems:

-Achieving wellness is limited to accomplishing defined goals: steps, activity, meditation, hydration and sleep.
-The goals will affect users behaviors by motivating users to do more activities in order to achieve a higher score.
-The data is represented as a score 1 to 100 which is meaningless to users.
Our Goals

In the research we have found that the mental and emotional wellness are accessed through goals and some numbers. However, it remains a question that whether the setting of goals and the scores can represent people's mental world and help them improve their emotional conditions without bringing more stress. Through the users' feedbacks we found that these information sometimes can make women feel more stressful and not confident in themselves.

We want to represent the emotional data without judging and in an imprecise way, which provoke reflections on self data. Through visulizing data as pendants with waves, to both represent the data change and the women's beautiful spiritual world. In this way, the system helps users improve mental wellness.

Our Concept

We think of a way to visulize data through the pendant which have features in its shape. And to create a system that combines the selling of tracking device and a  monthly gift box sent to you with your personal pendant and your self report .

The user journey

The wavy system has three parts: Tracking device bracelet, customization by website and data visualization bracelet. The color of pendant will be decided by users after logging in and buying bracelet, by customerizing on the website.

Where does data come from?

Wavy can be based on any wearable data tracking bracelet currently on the market. For this project, we refer to the smart bracelet of IVY Company. Its sensors use biological technology to measure people's physiological data.

It continuously monitors: heart rate, respiratory rate, cardiac coherence, physical activity, mental activity.

How is data represented?

The lenght of the wave pick in the rays is defined by the score that the related parameter has achieved. The height of the wave also depends on the same score.The higher the score, the more relevant the wave lenght and height.

The Pendant Design

At the end of each month, the user will receive a pendant where she will see reflected the average score achieved in each parameter of her goals. The pendant is produced by the company monthly through the SLS (selective laser sintering) technology and superficial finishing to make polished, enameled and colored.

How it can improve mental wellness?

The charms have a personal and intimate meaning. As pendants are added to the bracelet, the user will compare one charm with another to reflect on her progress. When a new year comes you get a new bracelet.You can collect year by year the bracelets to visualize your wellness history. With wavy, women will have motivation to perform better to achieve their goals, in order to get a beautiful shape in each month. When they achieve their wellness goals better, the pendant will be bigger, wavy, and colorful.

Customer Website Design

In the website users can buy the wavy bracelet and join the wavy service. The website is also an advertisement of wavy on the market to public the services that the wavy will provide and convey the idea that the brand represents.

On the website users can choose among different colors of the palette to represent each goal parameter and set up their monthly goals.

Conclusion

Modern people live in fast-paced times, everything is toward a set goal, and the ubiquitous scores are a reminder of your performance. People seem to be increasingly limiting their self-development to raising so-called scores, forgetting to focus on themselves, on their emotions and the changes and progress they really make.We want to be able to guide people to see their own changes, even if they are small, but also worth celebrating and encouraging. We want people to believe that your progress is beautiful enough like waves.
At the same time, we also found that wavy can be a market-oriented solution, because it has a complete set of service processes, including the producer, the brand side to perform their duties, and it is a long-term profitable service.
